Denver is a funky place. The last time I was in the Rocky Mountain city I was 12-years-old, on my way to a family vacation in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. In many ways Denver reminds me of Seattle without the constant presence of water. There are beautiful vistas on all sides of you, with the mountains looming large over the city. Culturally there is a unique blend of conservatism and counter culture here, and if you walk around downtown you will see cowboy hats proudly displayed alongside varying forms of tattoos and body piercings. The Marriott Denver City Center is a wonderful hotel, close to beautiful Coors Field (home of MLB’s Colorado Rockies), and within striking distance of several good restaurants.
Though the result didn’t go our way at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, it is still very early in the season and the team showed some real grit that was not indicative of the scoreline. DSG was the only stadium in Major League Soccer that I didn’t see in my first season with D.C. United due to a wedding last October. I was impressed with the facility, though a lovely mix of rain, sleet, hail, and snow created a chilly atmosphere at the time of kickoff. The pictures below will explain.
